Model Overview:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the pioneers that ushered in the modern midsize SUV in the early 1990s. Jeep has always wanted the Grand Cherokee to be maneuverable enough for urban duty, roomy enough for family duty, stylish enough to take out on the town and capable enough to tow your toys or shuttle your passengers to a remote campsite. Modern Grand Cherokees are far more refined than the early models, but they're no less versatile.

Unlike most other traditional SUVs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been built using a carlike unibody platform for superior on-road handling. Yet Jeep's strong reputation for off-road prowess is retained, thanks to the Grand Cherokee's advanced four-wheel-drive systems and capable suspension. It's a rare combination of attributes in a modern utility vehicle, as the Jeep is able to venture farther off the beaten path than competing crossover SUVs.

  • Like this car alot! - 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Ive liked this car enough to keep it for 10 years, despite several design flaws, because its comfortable, great looking, easy to handle, and the interior is well laid-out. I replaced the computer the second month I had it, and the A/C system twice in the last 4 years. The rear-view mirror has fallen off the windshield 3 times, and it gets a vapor lock at high elevations (over 10,000ft). I was really glad I bought the extended warranty. Im planning to buy a 2003.

  • Penny wise, pound foolish - 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Bought this vehicle off lease with 28k miles. Needed a high-clearance vehicle for work as I occasionally have to drive on dirt/gravel roads. I really wanted a 4Runner, but thought Id save $3,000 or so and "Buy American" - BIG mistake. Interior trim is peeling off of the doors and the seat fabric failed early. For some reason, Im always banging my foot on the door lip getting in & out. Has that "tippy" feel on corners. Worst of all, I had to replace the transmission at 65k mi, spending the $3000 I "saved" on the purchase, but it still doesnt work that smoothly.

  • Trouble free so far - but the nav sucks - 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I have the diesel, other than significant turbo lag it is a great engine. Getting away fast is dawdling off the line then launching at about 10mph with a neck snapping jump, from there on the 8 speed is flawless. The interior is fine and the electronics are good, other than the useless and expensive nav. Where I was born they call this "spoiling the ship for a haporth of tar". Basically going cheap rate on one part and ruining the whole effect. The navigation sucks. They used to use Garmin, that worked well. They switched to Navteq, which is poor. But the navigation display is what I normally use, so I see it sucking a lot. The auto zooms idea of far is a couple of hundred yards.

  • Bad Rear Differential - 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I bought this drift-wood colored V8 Orvis at 55000mi, and have put 113000 more on it. Brakes are a bit weak. Careful driving helps a lot. I occasionally haul light utility trailer-loads and have replaced rear differential at 75 and 160 miles. A/C controller went at 150 miles. Lift gate sprung leaks, causing light/alarm problems. E-Brake very weak. Can drive easily with it engaged. Engine still strong. Tranny original. Body very good. Some interior screws work loose. One and 1/2 speakers blown. Rear wiper frozen forever. Good truck to 140,000. Fuel mileage 13 US city, 19 at 75 mph, measured. Paint/exterior holding up really well. exhaust and entire front- end original (one link replaced at 94)

  • Great Truck - 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I had rented the JGC for two days earlier in a business trip. The rental totally changed my perception of the Jeep brand. The drive was smooth and the internal furnishing and electronics are as good as my other car, which was BMW Z4. At the conclusion of the rental, the truck was rear-ended by a Toyota Camry. The Camrys hood was badly damages, but the JGC has only a very slight impression of Toyotas emblem on its plastic bumper (the rented JGC has no tow hitch). When my wife said she wanted an SUV, that became my first choice. We tested a couple others, but both decided on the JGC. It has only been a couple days, but had been extremely happy with it. Everything comes as expected.

  • JUnk - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I have a 2005 GRand Cherokee. I have been driving it for 2 years. I have had numerous transmission problems two different control modules a million blown fuses, electrical sensors and so on. I always wanted a jeep and never have heard of such problems with one. I bought it at 36 thousand miles and problems started within a week. The first 6 months i spent in the shop getting things fixed under warranty, and 2 years later have spend my own money to fix it. I would not recommend buying one unless u have it thoroughly checked first!

  • Very strong Jeep - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I bought this August of 2003 with 114,500 on the odometer. Mine is a 4x4 because i have needs with my work where I will be offroad a lot.. I now have 256,830 on my odo. Only brakes once and fuel filters to maximize performance and mileage. I average 5,000 miles a month and drive it hard. Constantly at 4-5500 rpm range. I have tested this proven 4.0 engine. Use 4x4 4-5 times a week. Mud, rocks, sand, deep water, asphalt. I hit a deer on I10 in south texas and it drove away like a champ. Tranny still shifts good and engine starts every time. I know I can get 350k or more.

  • Good bad and ugly - 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

Very well pleased with the car. It has 123k miles and still runs well. Rear end noise has been a constant problem. Several attempts to repair and did not help. Cockpit very well appointed but needs more room. Very crowded with 4 adults. The ride is comfortable and fun to drive. Exterior paint has held up very well. No serious maintenance problems other than rear end. Sound system is very good but speakers are cheapos.

  • I have never had this many problems... - 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

If it isnt one thing its another. The window is broken, the transmission went out, the leather seats cracked, the vent on the a/c broke effectively blocking all air flow into the vehicle. I love the looks of this car, but I will never buy another one. It just got damaged by hail. I dont think I am even going to repair it. I will just trade it in as is and hopefully have a more reliable car in return - not a Grand Cherokee.

  • Better than Lexus - 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I traded my 07 Lexus ES for the 08 Overland and have no regrets. It handles great, awesome acceleration, and solid in the snow. Interior is just as nice as the Lexus. Black exterior with chrome is a strong combination. HEMI is the way to go, but plan on 16 mpg overall. No issues with the sound system or nav.
